I’m taking you behind the curtain into my life as a full-time wedding photographer! This is the official Photographer’s Guide to Rosewood Sand Hill Weddings. Today, I’m going to take you on a virtual site visit through one of my favorite bay area venues: Rosewood Sand Hill! For more on check out these resort and spa weddings.

The Photographer’s Guide to Rosewood Sand Hill Weddings
Tucked into the rolling hills of Menlo Park, Rosewood Sand Hill is one of Silicon Valley’s most luxurious wedding venues. With its serene landscapes, refined architecture, and breathtaking sunset views, it’s no wonder so many couples choose to say “I do” here. If you’re a wedding photographer or a couple planning your big day, this guide will give you an insider look at navigating and capturing the magic of Rosewood Sand Hill.
Getting There: Skip the City Traffic
Rosewood Sand Hill is conveniently located right off Highway 280, making it the ideal route to avoid the congestion of downtown Palo Alto. Trust us—there’s traffic in Palo Alto no matter the time of day. Coming in via 280 will save you stress and time.
Security Check-In: Quick and Easy
Upon arrival, head straight to the security dock. You’ll be asked to fill out a short form including the names and phone numbers of your team. After that, you’ll receive a badge and be cleared for entry—total time? Less than five minutes.
Vendor Load-In: Straightforward and Efficient
Drive straight to the vendor load-in area, which leads directly to the Vista and Sunset Lawn. These spaces often host ceremonies, cocktail hours, and receptions. You’ll unload your gear and store it in the designated vendor room—known as the Birch Room—conveniently located across from the Valley Oak Room.
Rosewood Sand Hill Highlights
The resort is spread across 16 lush acres and beautifully landscaped with native California flora like valley oaks, madrones, and olive trees. The entrance is marked with regal Canary Island palms, while lavender and sage add pops of color and fragrance throughout the grounds.
Photography Locations
Getting Ready
Bridal prep typically takes place in one of the resort’s spacious guest rooms. These suites offer plenty of natural light—perfect for makeup shots and candid moments. If time allows, the groom can get ready in a separate suite or outdoor space nearby.
First Look
For a quiet, natural setting, the olive tree paths are ideal. There are two groves—one by the pool and another near the gym. The path by the gym tends to be quieter and more shaded, making it preferable for both photography and video. Bonus: nearby redwoods offer a dramatic backdrop.
Indoors, the hallway in front of the Rosewood Grand Ballroom is another beautiful option. This area boasts elegant architecture and soft, natural lighting.
Family Portraits
In summer, the shaded garden in front of the fitness center is a favorite for large group shots. In spring, the area next to the Vista Lawn provides optimal lighting and enough space for multiple groupings. Just be sure to coordinate ahead with the families to keep things efficient.
Sunset Portraits
Timing is everything here—start your sunset portraits about 40–60 minutes before the official sunset time. The sun dips behind the mountains along 280 earlier than you’d expect. Ideal spots include the Sunset/Vista Lawn and the area above the pool, just below Madera restaurant and bar. This latter spot usually catches the very last light of the day.
Seasonal Features
A quick note for brides planning spring or fall weddings: based on past weddings photographed in April and September, the shaded garden in front of the fitness center is at its most vibrant by September. During March and April, the garden is still in its early bloom stage and may appear more sparse. If floral backdrops are a priority, it’s worth considering how the season will affect the setting.
